Green Men Are On The Roids!

I noticed awhile back, after picking up the new Warlord of Mars comic, that Joe Jusko changed the way he draws his Green Men, and in my opinion not for the better.

They use to be right on the mark (to my eye):

And now in the new comic they don't look much different than the Hulk:

Okay, they are not as ripped as the Hulk, but pretty darn close.  I am guessing the change is do to the comic company and making the juiced-up-greenies match the other interpretations of them, but still they lost a lot of 'alien' look to me.

Well, at least they can go play for the Yankees.

The Art of Barsoom

I don't really see it as 'bogging' down the site, but in the interest of getting back on track with game related posts, I slapped together another blog with just artwork related to Barsoom.  It is sortable by the artist's name.  I am trying to be accurate with the artist and their pieces for each entry, but I'm only human and I sort of put it together at break neck speed.  If you seen any discrepancies, please let me know.

I hope it gives everyone a little inspiration for the setting!

Michael Whelan

Michael Whelan
This week the artwork derived from Barsoom has been at the forefront of mind and I have been taking the time to collect and re-investigate the artists and their work; be it good or bad.

Michael Whelan is by far my favorite Barsoom artist.  I grew up with his covers on Edgar Rice Burroughs' books and they have always struck me as an awesome interpretation of ERB's Mars.  The images below are super familiar and have been posted over and over by people;  I even use bits and pieces of them throughout my blog to highlight the beasts, people and flora of Barsoom.

The Pictorial Arts Blog

The Pictorial Arts
I was out and about and ran across The Pictoral Arts blog and that link takes you to his ERB entries.  I need to educate myself a bit more on the artists that have brought Barsoom to life over the years, I recognize a lot of the artist's pieces, but I haven't always been able to put a name to the piece.

I have always seen William Stout's work, but upon reading the above mentioned blog, I am going to re-investigate his wonderful sketches. This looks like a must have for any ERB fan, but the price is a bit steep. Below are a handful of his sketches; click them to enlarge.

Site Updates for 1/4/2011

Updates have been made to the following pages:

Barsoom Bestiary
Added Apts and Zitidars

All of the pages have been updated: Some stat changes, reworked the layout for each entry and added some descriptive text from the books.

I am working on some more beasts to add here; if you have something you have Savaged or want me to add anything in particular (or add something peculiar!), drop me a line.
Pointed out edges from Adamant Entertainment's MARS; you will need the rulebook for the details. *
Flying Craft
Again, MARS has some more advanced rules and information for flying craft. They fit the Savage Barsoom setting very nicely. *
The Game
Updated the Table of Contents

* These additions are not necessary to play Savage Barsoom.
